For seasoned travelers, the Canadian Rocky Mountains have always ranked among the world’s most desirable destinations.

They come for the majestic peaks, lush valleys and the cool comfort of clean mountain air. They come to stay in grand hotels and dine on superb cuisine. In short: to live in splendour.

Now they come for the exceptional golf.

Hidden in the Rockies are some of the most magnificent courses on Earth. Some are world-famous, like the Stanley Thompson at the Banff Springs. Some, like Mount Kidd and Mount Lorette in Kananaskis, are well-kept secrets.

For a golfer, the Canadian Rockies are more than just spectacular. They are paradise.

Now you can play the world’s best game in the world’s most majestic setting…

In luxury and in complete comfort

For over a century the Canadian Rockies have been a haven of royalty, movie stars and moguls. They have stayed at our “Castle in the Rockies”, rested well in her well-appointed rooms, tasted exquisite cuisine and soaked in her famous baths.

Best of all, a short stroll from its hallowed halls, lies a most legendary golf course: The Banff Springs Stanley Thompson.

The majestic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel

In the following pages, we at CMEGolf.com, a premier golf tour company located locally, describe for you how you can best experience the golfing world of the Canadian Rockies.

Enjoy the tour!

Day 1: Fly to Calgary, Alberta Canada

Welcome to the gateway to the Canadian Rockies.

You have reached Canada’s fourth largest city, the home of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the famous Calgary Stampede and the nation’s capital for oil & gas.

As soon as you have collected your bags and passed through immigration, you will be met
by our friendly greeter, who will assist you in locating your rental vehicle and direct you on your way to the mountains.

The drive is pleasant, leading westward along an unhurried 4 lane highway; the Canadian Rockies a looming beacon.

After an easy 1.5 hours, you arrive at your destination. The Fairmont Banff Spring Hotel, located in Banff National Park, our first national park and a UNESCO world heritage site. You will now understand why that is so.

The efficient bell-men will take care of your luggage and your car while you proceed to check-in. You will have some time to refresh yourself and do some exploring before you will be met for an informal reception with one of our staff.

At this time the details of your arrangements will be re-confirmed. It is also the time when you will be able to determine what other sites you should see while visiting and learn where the best dining establishments are located.

You will be able to golf all courses, while staying at one convenient location.

The hotel will be your base of operations for the rest of your trip, so you can make yourself comfortable and not worry about moving from place to place. The tour has been designed so that you can easily drive to all of the championship golf courses in an hour or less.

Day 2: Kananaskis Golf Course

After a sumptuous buffet breakfast, included every morning at the hotel, you take a drive east to Kananaskis Country. This drive will take you less than an hour. At one point you will leave the mountains only to reenter as you turn south, following the Kananaskis River.

The name is derived from the native language, meaning: “meeting of the waters”.

Today you will play one of two exceptional courses there, designed by legendary architect; Robert Trent Jones Senior. Upon viewing the land set aside for golfing he said:

“The best natural setting I’ve ever been given the pleasure to work with”

Carved from the spectacular Kananaskis River Valley, Mt Kidd and its sister course, Mt Lorette, roll gently along the river valley under the jagged peaks of Mt. Lorette and Mt. Kidd. You will discover for yourself why these two courses are world class and recently named by Golf Digest as being one of the top 25 public courses in North America.

The finely sculptured greens and expansive fairways enhanced by the splendour of the Canadian Rockies promise a golf experience unique in the world.

Day 3: Stewart Creek

Today, you get to play Stewart Creek Golf Course, located in the neighbouring town of Canmore, a quick 20 minute drive from the hotel.

Canmore was a coal mining town until 1979. Since then it has transformed itself into a golfing and recreational destination to rival that of its famous sister, Banff.

Stewart Creek Golf Course is built on the abandoned mine site. A world class championship course, it
weaves the history of Canmore and the Canadian Pacific Railway into the natural contours and rugged geological formations that are the signature of mountain golf.

Measuring 7,150 yards from the back tee and 5,156 from the front, Stewart Creek challenges the professional player while allowing a stimulating game for the novice. Golf Digest ranked Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club as Best New Course in Western Canada in 2002 and has awarded it a 4½ Star Rating every year since.

Day 4: Banff Springs Golf Course

Today will be a special one as you stroll over to play one of Canada’s most famous courses: the Stanley Thompson Banff Springs golf course.

Club House of the Banff Springs Golf Course

Stanley Thompson, Canada's master golf course architect, used his expert talent when he designed the original 18 holes in 1928. The course winds along the Bow River under the snow-capped peaks of Sulphur Mountain and Mount Rundle.

The course offers just two simple things; first, a breathtaking view in every direction and second, a magnificent layout that thrills every golfer fortunate enough to spend a day here.

Amateurs and professionals alike are constantly amazed by its panoramic challenge. From the actual hole design to the optical illusions created by the surrounding mountains, this course will delight and tempt you.

Day 5: Exploring

The “Devil’s Cauldron” Banff Springs Golf Course

This day is designed to allow you to explore on your own and learn what makes the Canadian Rockies such a unique destination.

There is much to see and do.

You can drive up to the Columbia Icefield, two hours to the north. The drive takes you along the Icefield Parkway, definitely one of the most scenic in the world. The Parkway, which follows the Continental Divide, (the “spine” of the Nation) was named for the hundreds of glaciers that flank its west side.

The World’s
 Most Spectacular
 Highway

The entire drive stretches 170 miles between Lake Louise and Jasper. Here you will witness towering mountains, deep canyons and cascading waterfalls. Once you reach the Columbia Icefield itself, you can hop on board an Ice Explorer all terrain vehicle and experience a drive on top of ice that is 1200 feet thick. That is about the height of the Empire State Building!

Alternatively you can:

v     Visit the areas many museums

v     Take the gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain

v     Tour to Devil's Gap at the end of Lake Minnewanka

v      Shop at the hundreds of boutique and specialty shops

Or...

You can golf another round at any of the courses mentioned or travel a little further to test yourself on the many other excellent establishments.

Day 6: return to Kananaskis

Today you return to Kananaskis to the play the championship course you missed the first time around.

Kananaskis Golf Course – Mt. Lorette, looking north

This time, after your round, you should take the drive through Peter Loughheed Provincial Park, on the Smith Dorian Highway. This wide, smooth, gravel road, winds through incredible highlands and follows most of the entire length of Spray Lakes.

During the drive be on the look-out for moose, deer and elk. At the end of this drive, you will come onto “white-man’s” Pass, with a view high above the town of Canmore. On the other side of the valley you will see tomorrow’s destination; Silver Tip Golf Course.

Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, John Daly, Sergio Garcia join Stephen Ames this August for a SKINS Game at the Banff Springs Golf Course. You can play the same course as these Masters.

Call Brenda directly at: 403-609-3535 to make your arrangements.

Day 7: Silvertip Golf Course

Silvertip Golf Course with Canmore famous “Three Sisters” mountains in background

The penultimate day of your tour!

Many of you will likely agree that we have saved the best for last. Silvertip Golf Course has no peer on location or for the vistas off of each tee.

This 7200-yard championship course, designed by the renowned golf architect Les Furber, is as challenging as it is spectacular!

At SilverTip, golf is much more than a game. It’s about being in touch with nature. Where you are surrounded by some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, and where moments of solitude are broken by the voices of nature.

From its naturally elevated mountainside location and astounding 360-degree views, to a seemingly endless supply of warm Southern Alberta sunshine and countless acres of untouched wilderness, SilverTip offers what no other course can - 18 holes of beautifully designed golf overlooking the spectacular Bow Valley corridor, deep in the heart of the Rocky Mountain wilderness

Day 8: Return home

This will likely be the hardest day of your tour, if not your life.

After another amazing breakfast, you have time to loiter among the great halls of the Hotel or stroll around the vast grounds and trails surrounding it.

Finally its time to take your leave.

You call the bellman to bring your car and your luggage to the front entrance. A quick check to make sure you have everything and you are off.

Depending upon your flight time, you may still have time to do some last minute shopping in Banff or Calgary, before dropping off your vehicle at Calgary International Airport.

As your plane lifts off for its flight home, you bid the mountains to the west a fond adieu. And then you start, very likely, the planning for your return.

Memories of a Lifetime

There is no doubt that this trip will bring you lasting memories; memories to cherish and remember for the rest of your life.

You will be the envy of your friends, partners and colleagues.

You will recognize and understand why filmmakers have been using this region as the backdrop for Alaska, Montana, California, Wyoming and yes, even the Himalaya.

Stars of those films have been returning on their own account as have countless others, equally impressed.

And I think you will agree with me, this is likely the real secret behind the win at the most recent Players Championship by Stephen Ames. After all, this is his backyard!
